Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at KathleenBauerDPM@aol.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Debridement is when thick toenails are thinned, with either clippers or a sanding dremel tool, making them more comfortable to walk and wear shoes.  There is no set timeframe when thick, long or painful nails need treated.  When the nails become thick, long or painful call or text for an appointment.  Regularly scheduled appointments are available.

Many Medical insurance plans do not cover or are limiting coverage for routine nail care unless there is a medical necessity.  If we aren’t dealing with the constraints of health insurance plans, Dr Bauer has no minimum time frame and the patient may be treated as frequently as desired.  When your nails become painful or uncomfortable, call or text to schedule an appointment.  Most patients request care every 10-14 weeks, but are adjusted to what works best for their nail growth and complexities.

Dr. Bauer uses a variety of styles and sizes of nail clippers.  She also uses a dremel to help with excessively thick nails safely and with reduced pain.

This is a common question and not easy to answer.  Thick toenails are not always caused from fungus and yeast, but can also be from permanently damaging the area where the nail grows.  Diseases such as psoriasis and perpheral vascular disease can make nails thick and appear fungal.

Contact Dr. Bauer for an assessment on your toenails.  Together with a history of how the nails have deteriorated and her clinical experience, often a clinical diagnosis can be made.  However if there is any question as to whether the nails are fungal, Dr. Bauer will send a sample of the toenail to the pathology lab for official diagnosis.  This is painless, takes approximately 1 week, and is often covered by your insurance.

Dr. Bauer offers an educational consultation with a topical product package to treat toenail fungus. Current oral treatment has a high liver toxicity.  Treatment is lengthy and does not happen quickly.  Treatment is not guaranteed, however nearly all patients see a minimum of 50% improvement.

Dr. Bauer will gather important health questions related to the lower extremity.  Diabetes and peripheral vascular disease are common diseases that should have regular podiatric treatment.

Dr. Bauer will have you sit in your favorite comfortable chair and relax.  If you have a recliner, that works best.  It is your choice if you would like to have any family members present.  She will bring a small case with tools, a disposable foot towel, carefully treat your feet, cleanup, and discus future recommendation.  The session is quick and as painless as possible.  Dr. Bauer will happily put you on her scheduled rotation of patients.

DPM stands for Doctor of Podiatric Medicine.  Podiatrists graduate after 4 years of Podiatric Medical School, followed by a post graduate residence.

Dr. Bauer will travel throughout Brevard County on the east coast of Florida.  If you live in a neighboring county, please don’t hesitate to contact her for availability and pricing.

The cost of your in-home visit is by location in Brevard County.  Most treatment is included in the fee.  If you need more than nail care and a callus, please advise when scheduling.

See the pricing list and feel free to ask any questions.

If requested in advance, Dr. Bauer will provide you with a comprehensive receipt at the visit that you may submit to your insurance company.  Depending on your coverage and benefits, insurance may give you a reimbursement less your copay and any deductibles on medically necessary covered treatments.
